Painted storks have reached van vihar as the migratory season begin for these Beautifully colored birds. They were seen last week flying over kaliasoth and bhadbhada. This is the second week of December and compared to last year, painted storks were commonly seen in van vihar in the month of November. Many juveniles were also seen last year and hope to see them again this season.

Painted Storks, very easily identified are white in color, barred & marked with glossy greenish black and rose pink around shoulders & wings. They have long heavy yellow colored bill that is slightly decurved. They have bald head of waxy yellow color. Along with Painted storks, Asian open bill storks are also seen in Bhopal.

Whistling teals are again seen in huge numbers perhaps 300-400. They were present in large goups in and around the aviory. The sky was enveloped by so many birds flying that included cormorants, storks, teals, herons etc. It was like the birds were surveying the area for a better spot to enjoy the morning.

Other migratory birds seen today were marsh harrier & common sandpiper that come from europe, common stonechat & black redstart from himalayas, red throated flycatcher & lesser white throat that breed in westerns palearctic region.

Chital, or spotted deer is another attraction of Van Vihar National Park. It is the most common deer of India and also most beautiful. While watching birds, you can see them staring at you from behind the grass. Sometimes you see them crossing the road in a group. The group of chital is not divided but a mix of stags, hinds and fawns. Many fawns are seen now a days in Van Vihar.
