Birds that fly towards warmer areas in search of food and forage are called Migratory Birds. They travel long distances across states countries and even continent. During cold winters when food becomes scarce, migratory birds look for places usually down south, tropics or sub tropics where food is abundant. Thus to avoid extreme cold and search for food, bird migrate from one place to another.

Breeding grounds and feeding grounds of migratory birds are different. Migration requires great physical strength so only the best ones survive the journey. Migratory birds are strong and agile so that they can fly long distance in sometimes in extreme conditions. Birds like arctic tern travel about 70000 Kms to and fro through Arctic and sub arctic regions of Europe, Asia and Northern America in a year.

State of Madhya Pradesh lies in the north south corridor or the migratory path of birds coming from Northern Asia, Russia, Afghanistan, China, Mongolia or Europe, Pakistan etc. Bhopal is ideal destination for migratory birds with rich wetlands and catchment areas of upper and lower lake. Also, large number of water bodies and abundant food attract Booted warbler, Marsh harrier, Pied crested cuckoo, Wood sandpiper, Northern pintail etc. Places like Van Vihar, Shahpura lake, Bhadbhada dam, Kaliasoth dam etc are host to a lot of migratory species.
