Wetlands are defined as swamps or damp areas of land near or around a water body. Generally a place near lakes where large amount of water is surrounded by land is often called as a wetland. Birds associated with wetlands are referred to as Wetland birds. Bhopal has Upper Lake and lower lake that constitutes the area of Bhoj Wetland along with the nearby areas.

Bhoj wetlands has been designated as a Ramsar site as per the Ramsar Convention (The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat). Van Vihar is an integral part of these wetlands and hosts many migratory birds including Wetland migratory birds.
