Lalit
Shastri
When Bhopal
was hit by the worst industrial disaster in December 1984, Lalit
Shastri left a corporate job and spent more than a year studying
the causes that led to the poisonous gas leak at the Union Carbide
pesticide plant that killed over 20,000 people and critically
wounded at least 100, 000 others. His book "Bhopal Disaster—An
Eye Witness Account" was released by the then President of India,
Gyani Zail Singh in 1986. Later, he became a full-time print journalist.
During the
course of last 20 years, Lalit has written extensively on issues
like forest degradation, threat to endangered species, rapidly
depleting ground water, watershed management, industrial pollution,
and urban waste.
Lalit has
authored the investigative reports on the status of Tigers—titled
"Vanishing Stripes" His book "The Political Mirage—50 years after
India became Republic" was launched by the Prime Minister of India
Atal Behari Vajpayee in New Delhi in June 2000.
